Edit

Edit is where you draw and reshape geometry. It works on the vector layer selected in the Layers panel, and it edits the geometry only. Attributes are edited in the attribute table.

Open it from the right rail, or from a layer’s Edit geometry action, which opens the panel already pointed at that layer.

Editing applies to vector layers. Select a raster or a tile layer and the panel says so rather than offering tools that would do nothing.

The Create row offers the drawing tools that match the layer’s own geometry. A polygon layer offers polygon tools, a line layer offers line tools. An empty layer offers everything, since it has no geometry to respect yet.

Tool How it draws
Point Click the map to place it.
Line Click to add points, double click or press Enter to finish.
Freehand (line) Click to start, move to draw, click again to finish.
Polygon Click to add points, close the shape or press Enter to finish.
Rectangle Click a corner, then the opposite corner.
Angled rect. Click twice for the base edge, then click to set the depth.
Circle Click the center, then click to set the radius.
Freehand (polygon) Click to start, move to draw, click again to finish.
Sector Click the center, then the radius, then sweep and click to finish.
Sensor Click the center, sweep the arc, then click to set the depth.

While you are drawing, the panel shows the gesture that finishes the shape. Press Escape to discard it.

Click a feature on the map to select it. The edit tools then become available, in two groups.

Transform, on the whole shape:

  • Move: drag the shape.
  • Rotate: drag to turn it around its center.
  • Scale: drag a corner to resize it from its center.

Vertices, on the points that make it up:

  • Move vertex: drag any vertex.
  • Add vertex: drag a midpoint, shown on each edge, to insert one there.
  • Delete vertex: click a vertex to remove it.

One button is one transformation. There is no key to hold and no mode to guess.

Your changes are live on the map but not committed until you press Save. Cancel discards them. Done deselects the feature, and Delete feature removes it from the layer.

Snapping makes edges meet exactly instead of nearly. Turn it on at the bottom of the panel and choose:

  • Snap to: this layer, or another layer of your map. Snapping to another layer is how you make a new parcel share a boundary with an existing one.
  • Vertices and Edges: whether the cursor is attracted to the corner points, to the segments between them, or both.

Snapping applies to drawing and to reshaping alike.

Editing while you build, editing for your audience

Section titled “Editing while you build, editing for your audience”

This panel is yours as a builder. If you want your audience to edit features on a published map, turn on the Feature editor widget instead, and set what they may change from its parameters.

  • Attribute table, for the values behind the geometry.
  • Layers, where Materialize to editable layer turns a query backed layer into one you can edit here.
